One of the saddest things I think I will ever hear is when someone tells me that they have no plans for their birthday, or when I find out that someone let the entire day go by without anyone knowing it was their birthday.
I know that we’re no children anymore and that people don’t like to be reminded that they’re getting older, but your birthday is the one day of the year when you can feel like your 5 years old again and nobody will care.
I’m not saying that you should have a Barbie cake or clowns (because they’re just creepy), but you should do something just for you.
Do something that you WANT to do. You might celebrate your birthday by taking a nap, making it your cheat day that week for your diet, or just having a glass of red wine (heart benefits!) with dinner that night.
But something else you should do is talk to your parents if they’re still around. Because this might be YOUR birthday but it’s the anniversary of a very big day in THEIR lives. This is the anniversary of when your parents welcomed you into the world. So send them a text or an email if your outrageously swamped, and if you’re not, then pick up the phone and actually give them a call. When was the last time you did that? Probably longer ago than you care to admit.
I like to make a big deal about birthdays. I like to get cakes or cookies for my coworkers, to embarrass them by singing several times during the day, I love to give them a hug and make them feel special on that specific day of the year. Birthdays are a big day for everyone involved.
So, birthday to-do list: something that I want to do for no other reason than I want to do it, eat a cupcake, talk to my parents. I already feel like it’s going to be a great day and I’ve only been up for like an hour and a half!
